As we examine the literature of Francis, we see that Clare is central to understanding the vision and mission of Francis.

Francis hears from the crucifix at San Damiano, “Francis, go rebuild My house; as you see, it is all being destroyed.” The one who fulfilled that mission at San Damiano was not Francis but Clare during the forty-one years she lived there. That is why it is important to come to know Clare, to move and breathe in her spirit.

She carries out the mission of Francis; she lives out his vision perhaps more than any of the others, even among the first companions.

After Clare died in 1253, the basilica built in her honor was begun, being completed in 1260. This Basilica of Saint Clare has great symbolic value for everyone because of its role as a place in the Franciscan story. It stands as a symbol of the new age in Franciscan life that began with Clare’s death and burial.

The first Franciscan woman, who encompassed Francis’ vision for twenty-seven years after his death, is no longer. Thus a new chapter begins with this building.

Today we are the new generation, the current chapter in the unfolding of the Franciscan story.

We are called to continue the work of rebuilding and renewing. It is no accident that the original crucifix of San Damiano hangs in the Basilica of Saint Clare. As time and history run its course, this crucifix continues to be a source of inspiration and challenge for our lives.

It is still perhaps the most effective rebuilding tool we have. Let it hang before us in our favorite place of prayer. As Francis and Clare drew inspiration from it, may the same be true for us. May we hear its message and allow its power to transform hearts so as to rebuild society, the church and our lives.
